WORK OF PHOTOGRAPHER ELIZABETH RAND FEATURED IN MARCH AT THE DINAH WASHINGTON CULTURAL ARTS CENTER

(TUSCALOOSA, Ala.) The Arts Council of Tuscaloosa will host an exhibit of photography by Elizabeth Rand March 5-26, 2021 in The Arts Council Gallery at the Dinah Washington Cultural Arts Center. Titled “Eye Music,” the exhibit will open with a reception on March 5 from 5-8 p.m. during the First Friday Art Walk in Downtown Tuscaloosa.

Elizabeth Rand retired from her medical practice of Psychiatry in Tuscaloosa, Ala. in 2005 and moved with her husband and dog to Paris for a year. There, she revived her lifelong interest in photography after a 35 year hiatus. Immersed in the sights and lights of Paris and also stimulated by the opportunity to travel across several continents, she has created a large body of workprimarily in color. Having given up the darkroom and film for the moment, Rand currently uses two digital cameras, an Olympus OM-D E-M1 mirrorless and a Nikon D-80 for macro.

Rand has had the opportunity to participate in several group shows in Paris beginning in 2010 and more recently in Tuscaloosa. These are detailed on her website.  In addition, in Paris she created the front and back cover photos for the 2012 edition of “Bloom Where You’re Planted,” and in Tuscaloosa she contributed to a project entitled “Beauty Amid Destruction” sponsored by local artists following the devastating 2011 tornado.  In 2015 Rand created a reportage series documenting the work of a Paris soup kitchen, Friday Mission Lunch, sponsored by a consortium of five Paris congregations. This was exhibited for six weeks as part of a major fund drive.

Previous solo exhibits include those at The American Cathedral in Paris and Manna Grocery in Tuscaloosa in 2017.

Awards include those in the 2014 web blog “eyepreferparis” for unusual photos of the Eiffel Tower and in 2018 Alabama’s  statewide Double Exposure  Competition, Adult Division, for the image “Crematorium.”

Special recognition is given to Paul Rand, curator of this exhibit, and to Abby Wiersma, fine art printer at Art Editions & Gallery, in Birmingham , Ala.
