DINAH WASHINGTON CULTURAL ARTS CENTER WILL FEATURE WORKS
BY CHRISTOPHER DAVENPORT

(Tuscaloosa, Ala.) An exhibit by artist and educator Christopher Davenport titled “Pour la Enfants” (For the Children) will be featured at The Arts Council Gallery at the Dinah Washington Cultural Arts Center. The display will be open to the public July 2-26, 2019 with an opening reception held on Tuesday, July 2 from 5-8 p.m. The Dinah Washington Cultural Arts Center will not be open on First Friday, July 5, due to the July 4 holiday on Thursday.

The exhibit will consist of woodcut monoprints on Arches BFK Reeves paper. These layered prints are playful representations of our relationship with the ecological memory and identity of our region.

Chris Davenport tells stories of ecology, place, and people through photographs, film, handmade paper, and the artist book. As a teaching artist, he leads courses in Documentary and Conservation Photography, Image and Identity, The Art of Protest, Film and the Environment, Art & Ecology, and Environmental Research & Advocacy at The University of Alabama. He also teaches Book Arts, Conceptual Arts, Fundamental Drawing, 2D design, and 4D Design (time-based contemporary art) at The University of Alabama at Birmingham.

Additional projects include teaching photography, artist books, paper, and printing at the Penland School of Craft. His work has been cited at National and International Book Arts, Ecology, and Library and Information Science conferences as representations of ecological, social, and cultural issues and data. His photographs, films, paper, and artist books are in public and private collections.
