THE ARTS COUNCIL WILL HOST TWO EXHIBITS AT THE DINAH WASHINGTON CULTURAL ARTS CENTER IN MAY

(TUSCALOOSA, Ala.) The Arts Council of Tuscaloosa will present the 3rd Annual Tuscaloosa County School System Fine Arts Showcase May 3-17, 2019 and visual art from the Alabama Blues Project May 22-31 at The Arts Council Gallery at the Dinah Washington Cultural Arts Center.

The TCSS Showcase will open on May 3 at 5 p.m. during First Friday and will continue through May 17. The exhibit will be comprised of works by both middle and high school students. Each art teacher selected seven to ten pieces with the display including a variety of media. There are five high schools and eight middle schools in the TCSS.

The First Friday reception will also include performances by the Sipsey Valley High School Jazz Band and Theatre Department in the Black Box Theatre. Brooke Mason, Director of Bands, will conduct the Jazz Band, and theatre students will be led by teachers Stacie Holland and Mary Garner.

The Alabama Blues Project’s annual fundraiser, “An Evening of Art and Blues,” features donated paintings, jewelry and crafts from local artists. The works in this exhibit, running May 22-31, will be drawn from the fundraiser with pieces by artists such as Emily Pickert, Mojo Fabrics & Quilts, Bruce Andrews and Kim Deals. The items will be for sale and will benefit the Blues Project, a nonprofit organization aimed at promoting and preserving the Blues as a traditional art form with focus on Alabama’s musicians.

Gallery hours are weekdays 9 a.m.- noon and 1-4 p.m. For more information about all gallery events taking place on First Friday and the locations, visit www.firstfridaytuscaloosa.com.
