SOUTHERN DANCEWORKS PERFORMANCE PRESENTED AT THE BAMA THEATRE
(Tuscaloosa, AL) Southern Danceworks, a contemporary dance company based in Birmingham, Alabama, will present a program of multiple works on November 7, 2011 at the Bama Theatre. The performance will begin at 7:30 p.m. with general admission prices of $13 adults and $9 children, seniors and students. Tickets can be purchased at bamatheatre.org/buytickets.
The performance is sponsored by The Arts Council, Alabama State Council on the Arts, the Tuscaloosa Tourism and Sports Commission and Full Moon Bar-b-que.
The program will be chosen from the following:
“Quixotic” – A lyrical dance originally choreographed on the Alabama Ballet by artistic director Teri Weksler with music by Percy Grainger
A piece by New York choreographer Reggie Wilson, director of Fist and Heels
“make like a tree” – An intense and dynamic piece based on primitive ritual with music by Ginastera; Choreographed by Kraig Patterson, longtime member of the Mark Morris Dance Group
“Distinct Destiny with an Open Fist” – Choreographed by New York artist Germaul Barnes, who was a member of the Bill T. Jones dance company.
A part of the community since 1963, the mission of Southern Danceworks is to advance dance as a major art form, contributing to and enriching the life, culture and community of Alabama. As Alabama’s oldest professional modern dance company, Southern Danceworks offers a wide variety of acclaimed programs with “an overarching commitment to quality at the highest level” (The Birmingham News). Under the direction of Artistic Director Teri Weksler, the company presents repertory concerts with works by regional and nationally renowned choreographers. As part of its outreach program, Southern Danceworks holds educational performances for schools, master classes and teacher workshops based on the National Standards for Dance Education and state dance curricula.
