DINAH WASHINGTON CULTURAL ARTS CENTER EXHIBIT FEATURES THE WORK OF GREG CARTMELL
(Tuscaloosa, Ala.) The Arts Council of Tuscaloosa will host an exhibit of work by artist Greg Cartmell at the Dinah Washington Cultural Arts Center in May. The exhibit, titled “Broken Color,” will open on Friday, May 1, 2015 at 5 p.m. during First Friday and conclude on May 29. A reception honoring the artist will take place on Friday, May 8 from 5 – 8 p.m.
A professional artist for over 45 years, Greg Cartmell is nationally recognized as one of the country’s foremost painters. His works are in private and corporate collections throughout the world. The recipient of over 300 awards, he has been published in numerous regional and national journals such asArt & Antiques, Architectural Digest, Art World News, Art Business News, The Artist Magazine, Grey’s Sporting Journal, Mississippi Magazine and Millionaire Magazine. Cartmell is also listed in Who’s Who in American Art.
The purpose of the exhibit is to showcase paintings that depict the art of “Broken Color.” Cartmell paints en plein air, the tradition of on-location painting, directly from nature and life. A true impressionist, he paints in broken color whereby engaging the viewer to mix the color with one’s own eye. At times, the quality of light becomes the main focus of his work. The collection includes 25 oil paintings of landscapes and portraits with sizes in 8 x 10, 16 x 20, 20 x 24, 24 x 36, 30 x 40, 36 x 48 and 36 x 60.
The reception will include a book signing of his beautiful 11 x 14 coffee table book, “Mississippi Light,” featuring a collection of Cartmell’s most intimate paintings of sunset and landscape scenes from across Mississippi.
The Arts Council Gallery hours are 9 – noon and 1 – 4 p.m. on weekdays and noon – 8 p.m. on First Fridays.
