2025 West Alabama Juried Show Competition and Exhibit

The Arts Council of Tuscaloosa is sponsoring its annual juried show/exhibit for West Alabama artists January 15-February 18, 2025 at the Dinah Washington Cultural Arts Center’s Arts Council Gallery. A $35 entry fee (+$2.50 convenience fee if paying online) entitles any West Alabama artist to submit up to three works for judging. Only original two- and three-dimensional works by artists living in Bibb, Dallas, Fayette, Greene, Hale, Jefferson, Lamar, Marion, Pickens, Perry, Shelby, Sumter, Tuscaloosa, and Walker Counties are eligible. Entries must not have been previously entered in a West Alabama Juried Art Show.

Important Dates
November 18-December 2: Submit digital images and application through email to competitions@tuscarts.org and pay fee with link provided

December 3-16: 1st Round ofJudging and notification of artists who have works accepted

January 7-8: Works juried into the show will be taken in at DWCAC in Conference Room from 9:30 a.m. until 4:00 p.m.; Closed for lunch Noon-1 p.m.

January 9-14, 2025: Hang Show

January 15: WAJS opens to the public with weekday hours Monday-Friday 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.

February 7: First Friday featuring exhibit at 5 p.m. and awards presentation at 5:30 p.m.

February 18: Final day of exhibit

February 19 & 20: Artists pick up works

Awards
The Chamber of Commerce of West Alabama Purchase Award – $1,000, to be included in The Arts Council’s permanent collection and displayed at the Chamber of Commerce of West Alabama, 2nd Street in downtown Tuscaloosa.

Gail Skidmore Memorial Award of Excellence – $300
Contributed by The Arts Council

One Cash Award – $100
Contributed by The Arts Council

Accepted Media
All two- and three-dimensional media will be accepted.

Submissions
Email your completed form and digital images of your entries (one of each entry) as attachments (in one email) to competitions@tuscarts.org from November 18-December 2, 2024. Images must be in .jpg format and no larger than 2 megabytes. Keep in mind, images should be clear enough for your piece to be judged at its best, but small enough to email. For each image, you must enter a title (required, “Untitled” not acceptable), dimensions and description, and a sale price on the form on the website. If NFS, a value must be included for insurance purposes.

Please name your files with the matching title of the piece so the judge can match piece to title.

You will receive an email notification that your entries have been received.

Payment of the $35 entry fee will be accepted with a credit card through a link that will be provided on this page beginning November 18. A convenience fee of $2.50 will be added to your order.

Notification
Once the jury process is complete, you will be notified by email about the status of your entries no later than December 16, 2024.

Delivery of Accepted Works
Accepted works must be brought to The Arts Council Conference Room at the Dinah Washington Cultural Arts Center, 620 Greensboro Avenue, downtown Tuscaloosa, January 7-8, 2025 from 9 a.m. – noon and 1 – 4 p.m. All two-dimensional pieces accepted for the show must be ready for hanging and framed. Frames must be equipped with wire securely attached for hanging. Wires must not show above the frame when hung on the wall. LOOSE WIRES, SAW TOOTH BRACKETS OR OTHER HANGERS ARE NOT ACCEPTABLE, AND THE WORK WILL BE REJECTED PRIOR TO FINAL JUDGING.

If works are submitted and accepted but are delivered unframed or not prepared to hang, they will be disqualified and not included in the show.

Any special installation requirements must be handled by the artist. Works of this nature will be accepted at the discretion of The Arts Council. Works executed in a class or workshop will not be accepted. All works should be labeled on the back upper right corner with the completed labels provided. All works must be titled. “Untitled” is not acceptable. Maximum size is 5 .5 feet x 5.5 feet, and maximum weight is 50 pounds for all entries.

Final Round of Judging, Closing Reception, and Exhibit Dates
Once accepted, works will be hung in the gallery followed by a second round of judging to select the winners. Winners will be announced at 5:30 p.m. during First Friday on February 7, 2025 from 5-7 p.m. during First Friday. Exhibit dates are January 15 – February 18, 2025.

Insurance and Sales
All works will be insured while in the custody of The Arts Council, however, works will not be insured or considered to be in our custody prior to or after the designated dates. Any work accepted for the show may be priced to sell to the public. Buyers will be referred to the artist for purchases; The Arts Council will not handle transactions. The Arts Council does NOT charge a commission on sales for this competition.

Pick-up and Publicity
Works accepted for the exhibit must remain until the conclusion of the exhibit. Pick up will be February 19-20 from 9 a.m.-noon and 1-4 p.m. at the DWCAC. Works which are not picked up within one month will be donated to charity. The Arts Council reserves the right to utilize images of accepted and/or winning entries for publicity or educational purposes and display those images at our discretion.
