SWAMP CABBAGE AND P4 FEATURED ON DECEMBER 2 ACOUSTIC NIGHT
(Tuscaloosa) Acoustic Night will feature Swamp Cabbage and P4 on December 2, 2012 at 7:30 p.m. Presented by The Arts Council of Tuscaloosa, Acoustic Night features new and upcoming musicians from around the country throughout the calendar year in the intimate setting of the Bama Theatre’s Greensboro Room. Cover is $5 with a full service bar available.
Swamp Cabbage was formed in 2001 by veteran guitarist Walter Parks, who built an international career as the lead guitarist for Woodstock legend Richie Havens. Parks, who recently marked his debut as a solo artist with the release of his self-titled album earlier this year, formed the group along with bassist Jim DeVito and drummer Jagoda as a way to explore his southern musical influences. Swamp Cabbage sounds like a southern rock band but “thinks” like a jazz, blues or classical trio. Harmonically, their sound is more complex than the blues. Rhythmically it’s akin to New Orleans jazz. Lyrically, they offer a comedic travelogue through Park’s North Florida upbringing, all complimented by his electric guitar style — a mélange of Scott Joplin’s ragtime and Jerry Reed’s bayou pickin. DeVito’s bass barks like a tuba through a fuzz box and is backed by Jagoda’s New Orleans funeral parade style drummin’.
P4 consists of mutual friends David Allgood, vocals, guitar and bass; Mike Orlin, vocals, guitar and bass; and Joey Dukes, drums. The three have been friends and musical partners for over thirty years, having teamed up in Atlanta in the mid-1970’s playing in the local club scene that spawned REM, Indigo Girls, Tinsley Ellis and The Georgia Satellites. During this time period, David and Mike also began writing songs together and formed a band around their original material: The Legendary Atlanta Crackers. In various musical formations, the three friends opened for many national acts on Atlanta stages well into the mid-1980’s including John Prine, Roseanne Cash, Leon Russell, The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band and Asleep at The Wheel – to name but a few. They will be performing a variety of both obscure cover and original songs incorporating a wide variety of styles. Under the mysterious moniker, P4,the band plans to rock into the future until, as Allgood says, “They pry my cold, dead fingers from the neck of my Fender Precision.”
