Staibdance Brings “ARARAT” to the Historic Bama Theatre September 12

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — The Arts Council of Tuscaloosa will present ARARAT by staibdance at The Historic Bama Theatre on Friday, Sept. 12, at 7:30 p.m. The evening performance will be preceded by a masterclass from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m., where participants will engage with staibdance’s movement and methods to gain a deeper understanding of the process that shaped the creation of ARARAT.

Created by acclaimed choreographer George Staib, ARARAT considers the history and resilience of the Armenian people following a genocide that claimed 1.5 million lives. Rooted in survivor stories and parallel investigations toward newness, the work illuminates the countenance of the human spirit. Audiences are invited to journey into the matter of becoming, as the piece asks: When all things are new, how important is the old?

Known for its fearless physicality and evocative storytelling, staibdance fuses contemporary movement with themes of cultural identity, history, and transformation. ARARAT stands as both a tribute to a people’s endurance and a meditation on renewal.

Following the performance, audience members are invited to stay for a Q&A/Talkback with the Artistic Directors and cast of ARARAT, offering a unique opportunity to gain deeper insight into the creative process and themes of the work.

Tickets for ARARAT and the masterclass are available at www.bamatix.org.

ARARAT was made possible in part by the National Endowment for the Arts and the Tri-M Foundation.

The Historic Bama Theatre is located at 600 Greensboro Avenue in downtown Tuscaloosa.
