EXHIBIT OF WORKS BY AMBER QUINN AT THE DINAH WASHINGTON CULTURAL ARTS CENTER

(TUSCALOOSA, Ala.) An exhibit of photography and ceramic tiles by artist Amber Quinn is on display at the Dinah Washington Cultural Arts Center through July 24, 2020. Titled “Fragmented and Forgotten,” the exhibit is also available through video on The Arts Council of Tuscaloosa’s website at https://cac.tuscarts.org/cacgallery.php. This is a University of Alabama Department of Art and Art History master of arts thesis exhibition.

According to the artist, this body of work intertwines Quinn’s lived experiences that she deals with as a black woman with those of American history. Her interest in the premise of the contrast of her unknown and involuntary inheritance from American history still plays a role in her life, although that history is often fragmented and incomplete. By focusing on the female slave’s perspective and narrative, Quinn’s images tackle the conversation about the effects of survivor’s guilt while confronting a history she did not experience or witness. She utilizes self-portraiture to insert herself into the reality of an enslaved woman’s experience, the facade she had to maintain and how this idea of avoidance is still an issue in the present.

“The intent of this work is to bring attention to the relationship between oppression and suppression by comprehending notions of power dynamics, identity and Black womanhood,” said the artist.

Amber Quinn received the BA in Arts from the University of Montevallo (2018). She recently completed her MA in studio arts (concentrated in photography) this past spring and will be continuing her MFA this fall, both at The University of Alabama. She was recently awarded a grant in The Arts Council’s Small Grants Program.

Gallery Hours are weekdays from 1-3 p.m. The venue is following guidelines set forth by the City of Tuscaloosa Mask Ordinance so visitors are asked to wear a mask when visiting.
