WORKS BY CHRISTOPHER DAVENPORT FEATURED AT THE DINAH WASHINGTON CULTURAL ARTS CENTER

(Tuscaloosa, Ala.) The Arts Council of Tuscaloosa will host a presentation of work by MFA candidate Christopher Davenport at the Dinah Washington Cultural Arts Center in April. The exhibit, titled “Twelve Days,” will open on Wednesday, April 1, 2015 and conclude on April 17. A reception honoring the artist will take place on Friday, April 10 from 5 – 8 p.m.

Beginning in January 2014, Christopher Davenport set out to spend one full day and night each month embedded in the wilderness as a journey of ecological renewal, contemplation and reconnection for the entire year. With an emphasis on photography, his University of Alabama MFA in the Book Arts thesis is shaped by this continuing symbiotic practice in ecological awareness through imagery, language, paper and structure to carry intersecting narratives of place, identity, memory and environment. “Twelve Days” represents Davenport’s professional artistic and personal ethos of social, cultural and ecological practice through photography and the handmade artist book.

“Twelve Days” is his thesis exhibition for the MFA in the Book Arts Program at The University of Alabama.

As Pocket Knife Press, Davenport collects, preserves and publishes narratives of place, ecology, culture and people through photographs, storytelling, film, sound, paper and the artist book. He teaches at The University of Alabama and conducts workshops throughout the Southeast. He is an Arts in Education resident with the Alabama State Council on the Arts, exhibits and curates exhibitions regularly and is collected by various institutions including Wesleyan University, Yale University, The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, The Visual Studies Workshop, Mills College and The University of Alabama. He is represented by Vamp and Tramp Booksellers, LLC.

The Arts Council Gallery hours are 9 – noon and 1 – 4 p.m. on weekdays and noon – 8 p.m. on First Fridays.
