WORKS BY ARTIST SKY SHINEMAN WILL BE FEATURED AT THE CULTURAL ARTS CENTER

(Tuscaloosa, Ala.) “Seismic Shift” will be hosted by The Arts Council of Tuscaloosa at the Dinah Washington Cultural Arts Center during the month of Nov. The exhibit, composed of works by UA faculty member Sky Shineman, will open with a reception on Nov. 7, 2014 from 5 – 8 p.m. during First Friday and will conclude on Nov. 26.

Shineman is a painter from Columbus, Ohio.  Following her undergraduate education, she relocated to Portland, Ore. and then, in 1998, to New York City. There she worked for five years in publishing before leaving and returning to Ohio to pursue a graduate degree in studio art.

At The Ohio State University she worked with artists Ann Hamilton and Suzanne Silver whose art emphasized the potency of the handmade object and the potential of unexpected materials. During this time she also worked with Laura Lisbon, co-curator of “As Painting: Division and Displacement,” an exhibit built upon concepts introduced by artists aligned with the mid-60’s French art movement “Supports/Surfaces.” Through this experience ideas of surface depth, the capacity of a monochrome and the presence of painting as a product of individual labor were reinforced.

This year Shineman was awarded a research grant by The University of Alabama to investigate new painting materials including powdered pigments and organic mediums. The works in “Seismic Shift” are a product of this inquiry, serving as a record of elemental relationships and physical processes.

Shineman joined the faculty of The University of Alabama in 2009 and teaches painting courses in the Department of Art and Art History. She continues to cultivate a creative practice through her studio work and the development of a small homestead on an acre of land on the east side of Tuscaloosa.

The Arts Council Gallery hours are weekdays from 9 a.m. – 12 noon and 1 p.m. – 4 p.m. Admission is free.
