WORK OF ARTIST MARY ELIZABETH WATSON AT TUSCALOOSA’S CULTURAL ARTS CENTER IN MAY

(Tuscaloosa, AL) The Arts Council of Tuscaloosa will host a presentation of work by MFA candidate Mary Elizabeth Watson at the Dinah Washington Cultural Arts Center. The exhibit, titled “Words Carry Distances to You,” will open with a reception on May 2, 2014 from 5 – 8 p.m. during First Friday and will conclude on May 23.

The exhibition will present Watson’s book projects utilizing letterpress, handmade paper and bookbinding produced during her time as an MFA student in the Book Arts program at The University of Alabama. Also featured will be a series of letterpress broadsides that combine text from poet M.C. Richards with original imagery printed from photopolymer plates and linoleum carvings.

“Each piece in the show offers a unique perspective on the communicative process. While some works address communication through language, image, and gesture, others draw attention to breakdowns in communication or logic. Such fissures might occur in failures to express oneself through language, inauthentic representation of oneself to another person, or in the altered logic of a dream state,” said Watson.

An opening reception will be held on May 2 from 5 – 8 p.m. during Downtown Tuscaloosa’s First Friday event. The Arts Council Gallery hours are 9 – noon and 1 – 4 p.m. on weekdays and noon – 8 p.m. on First Fridays.

The Dinah Washington Cultural Arts Center is located at 620 Greensboro Avenue in Downtown Tuscaloosa.
