VISUAL ART BY ULRIKE FRANZ AT THE BAMA THEATRE DURING APRIL

(Tuscaloosa)  Work by local artist Ulrike Franz will be featured at the gallery space in the Bama Theatre’s Greensboro room during the month of April. Titled “How is it Cowing?,” the exhibit will be on display from April 4 – 30, 2013 with a public reception on April 15th from 7:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m.

The subject matter of the work featured in the show will focus on the cow. This theme will be represented in handmade books, the design-sketches preparing the books as well as watercolor paintings. The watercolors were  produced using handmade paper, made in the lost Arch Paper Mill at The University of Alabama. Newly made Intaglio-prints will also be included in the show.

“The starting point for my work is the visual appearance of the subject’s nature. Shapes and colors from our world that formed the cultural legacies of our ancestors allow me to compose images in unusual formats. This is reflected in the intense color and the decorative character of many motifs. In my sequences, I tell stories with hieroglyphic-like rows and miniatures, often with variations on a theme. Gouache, watercolor, acrylic, and ink are my favorite media, anything that is soluble in water. Paper is the most used canvas in my work. Currently I am doing my first experiments with acrylic painting on textiles and printing techniques as etching.”

Originally from Reutlingen, in Southern Germany, Franz studied Art History at the Universities of Tübingen and Basel, Switzerland, and conducted Special Studies at the Art Institute of the University Tübingen. She has presented single and group shows in Germany, France, Hungary and Austria. The artist is currently a graduate student in the Book Arts Program at The University of Alabama. Examples of Frank’s work can be viewed by visiting the artist’s blog at uibookart.blogspot.com or her website at ulrikefranz.de.

The Bama Theatre is located at 600 Greensboro Avenue in downtown Tuscaloosa. Gallery hours are Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. and also during Bama Theatre events. Enter the gallery through The Arts Council offices, located on the second floor of the PARA Building, during daytime hours.
