TUSCALOOSA’S CULTURAL ARTS CENTER WILL HOST EXHIBIT BY JOHN DEMOTTE

(Tuscaloosa, AL) The Arts Council of Tuscaloosa will host “Reconstructions,” an exhibit of photographs and photo–etchings by Birmingham artist John DeMotte at Tuscaloosa’s Dinah Washington Cultural Arts Center. The exhibit will open with a reception on April 4 from 5 – 8 p.m. during First Friday and will conclude on April 25.

This show features captured images of foundations left after demolition. DeMotte used surfaces to create photos and prints that connect construction and deconstruction found in the environment to the additive and reductive processes and nature of contemporary abstraction. This connection is made by using structure and randomness in space creating visual and conceptual balance.

DeMotte received his BFA in 1987 from the University of Montevallo in photography and printmaking.  Beginning his career in Washington, D.C., he worked on projects for The Phillips Collection, Capitol Hill Arts Center and the Washington – Moscow Arts and Cultural Exchange.  Since returning to Birmingham in 1991, he has been with Atchison Gallery/Village Framers where he is now Vice-President and Master Framer.  As a founding member of the artist co-operative PaperWorkers Local, he has developed and led a workshop on Solar Plate photo-etching.  His work has been included in solo, group and juried exhibitions and is found in public and private collections throughout the Southeast and Mid-Atlantic.

An opening reception will be held on April 4 from 5 – 8 p.m. during Downtown Tuscaloosa’s First Friday event. The Arts Council Gallery hours are 9 – noon and 1 – 4 p.m. on weekdays and noon – 8 p.m. on First Fridays.
