STUDENT ART FEATURED AT MYRTLEWOOD ELEMENTARY

(TUSCALOOSA, Ala.) The public is invited to attend an evening of art and storytelling at Myrtlewood Elementary School on Tuesday, January 15 from 6-7 p.m. The Myrtlewood second graders, teachers and the staff of the West Alabama Arts Education Resource Center will present a program showcasing student work from the nine week arts integration program.

Currently, less than 40% of school systems across the state of Alabama offer arts education programming, with rural communities impacted the most. A leadership team of arts, education, business and community leaders from across the state worked for three years to create the Alabama Plan for Arts Education.

As a result, The Arts Council of Tuscaloosa established the West Alabama Arts Education Collaborative, a project of the Artistic Literacy Consortium. The Collaborative is led by its director, Shannon McCue, and is administered through a regional office located at the Dinah Washington Cultural Arts Center. The Artistic Literacy Consortium is a joint project between the Alabama State Council on the Arts and The Alabama State Department of Education with regional offices also located in Birmingham and Huntsville.

Myrtlewood Elementary is the first school to participate in the programming the Collaborative has to offer students and teachers. The school is located at 14701 Gainesville Rd., Fosters, Ala.
