POETRY SLAM AT THE BAMA THEATRE WILL FEATURE COMPETITION WITH CASH PRIZES

(Tuscaloosa) The Collegiate Arts and Humanities Council of Tuscaloosa County will host the second “Poetry Slam at the Bama” on Thursday, October 13 at 7:30 p.m. at the Bama Theatre.  Emcee for the evening will be Abraham Smith, poet and Instructor of Literature and Creative Writing at The University of Alabama.  Celebrity Judges will include faculty from Stillman College, UA, and Shelton State as well as a special guest from Birmingham, Alabama.  One judge will also be chosen from the attending audience.  Poetry Slam is open to all ages but the content of the material may be appropriate for mature audiences only.

“Poetry Slam” is a competition for local poets that will take place at the Bama’s Greensboro Room with cash prizes for 1st, 2nd and 3rd places.  The panel of judges will choose the winners after three rounds of competition, with the final round consisting of improv.  Contestants are encouraged to arrive at 7:00 p.m. to sign in as the list will be capped at twelve participants. However, there will be three wild card participants chosen at random. Requirements include: 1. Original material only; 2. Three minute time limit per poem; 3. No props. The evening will also feature a 15 minute “open mic” portion during intermission for those who wish to share their poetry with the audience, but not participate in the competition.

There is no entry fee for participants, but the cover charge for all those attending the event will be $5.  Free popcorn with purchase of a drink as well as other concessions will be available.  The Bama Theatre is located at 600 Greensboro Avenue in downtown Tuscaloosa.   For more information about The Arts Council or Bama Theatre visit tuscarts.org or follow the group on Facebook at “The Arts Council – Bama Theatre – Cultural Arts Center” and Twitter.  Call 205-758-5195 for further information.
