PHOTOGRAPHY BY GUENTER KOEHLER FEATURED IN THE JUNIOR LEAGUE GALLERY

(Tuscaloosa)  The Arts Council will present an exhibit of photography by local artist Guenter Koehler at the Bama Theatre’s Junior League Gallery on August 4 – 24, 2011.  Titled “Earth Sculptures & Other Natural Formations,” the display will feature Koehler’s large format photos of sculptural objects found in nature, particularly felled trees and their roots.   Through the artist’s lens, the viewer is presented with unique images of these organic forms with his use of color and abstract composition.

A native of Berlin, Germany, Koehler immigrated to the United States in 1956.  After serving in the U.S. Army, he attended college at The University of Alabama.  The artist financed his education through a hobby he began while in the Army, photography, and briefly considered the art form as a career choice.  He eventually supported himself by way of word processing with an electric typewriter.  This line of work enabled him to pursue writing, and he completed the first draft of a book titled On the Science of Art and the Art of Science in 1976.

Koehler adapted to the inevitable dominance of computer technology in the 1980s and shifted from word processing to graphic design.  He produced printed materials including brochures, booklets, board games and basically any media combining text with graphics.  His passion for writing also continued with the penning of Scientist-Turned-Priest (1986).

After retirement in 2003 and the advancement of digital technology, Koehler again pursed his original passion, photography.  The upcoming exhibit, “Earth Sculptures & Other Natural Formations,” is the result of his creative evolution maturing within the scope of the digital age.  With this exhibit, the artist hopes to move passed the boundaries set forth by traditional photographic techniques and modes of expression.

The exhibit will open with a reception on Thursday, August 4, 2011 from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. during Art Night.  The exhibit can also be viewed Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. or during Bama Theatre events.  Admission is free.
