MFA EXHIBIT FEATURING THE WORKS OF ROGER JONES AT THE JUNIOR LEAGUE GALLERY

(Tuscaloosa) The Arts Council will host an exhibit of drawings by MFA candidate Roger Jones at the Bama Theatre’s Junior League Gallery April 20-May 4, 2012, with a reception taking place April 25 at
7 p.m.  Jones’ exhibit, titled “Rotation,” will occur in partial fulfillment of the Master of Fine Arts in Studio Art at The University of Alabama.

Roger Jones is native to Tuscaloosa but grew up in Selma.  Architecture, travel, and music have always been the focus of his work, with drawing as the process through which he explores imagery related to these themes.  The works featured in Rotation position drawing as a visual extension of thought processes, where each mark is an intersection between sensation and material.

Jones graduated with a BA from The University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee in 2007 and is currently a teaching assistant for Studio Art classes at The University of Alabama.  He has exhibited in group shows in Alabama, Mississippi and Tennessee.

Artist Statement
In these drawings, sensations induced by sound are explored as visual concepts through mark making.  The accumulation of marks mimics the arrangement of sound in musical sequences.  Surfaces that retain the history of each image’s development render the work an intersection between concept and material.  Visual themes that emerge within this series position each drawing as a stage in an ongoing process.
