Frankie Gavin has been playing fiddle and flute since his teenage years, and at the age of seventeen, won two All Ireland competitions. He later found himself performing with stars such as The Rolling Stones, Stephane Grappelli, Elvis Costello, Earl Scruggs and Yehudi Menhuin as well as with some of the great contemporary players and singers of traditional Irish music. His name is also synonymous with De Dannan, the globally renowned band he founded in the mid-1970s, then, after a short break in the early 2000s, restarted the band with a new, young line-up. Gavin has performed for four American presidents including John F. Kennedy, Bill Clinton, George W. Bush and Barack and Michelle Obama. He is considered the most exciting fiddle player and moving flute player in the world of Irish music today.
Tommy McCarthy and Louise Costello come from families steeped in traditional Irish music. McCarthy (fiddle), grew up listening to traditional music and playing with all of the legendary Irish players who were living in London including Máirtín Byrnes, Raymond Roland, Roger Sherlock, Danny Meehan, Paddy Taylor and Bobby Casey. He performed throughout Ireland and the U.K. with his family including The Royal Albert Hall, London.
Costello (banjo), from Galway, performed with her father Denny and local fiddlers Joe Morris & Jim O’Brien, flutist Joe Collins and friend Paddy Hession. In her late teens she broadened her musical horizons and became part of Galway’s vibrant session scene where her banjo playing was influenced by Charlie Piggott. Tommy and Louise met in 1987 playing trad sessions in the Boston area and have continued to play together and with many notable musicians including The Chieftains. In 2014 the duo released the critically acclaimed album,”Grace Bay”, featuring original compositions by McCarthy, as well as traditional favorites.
