DOWNTOWN MONSTERS NOW FEATURED ON THEIR OWN WEBSITE

(TUSCALOOSA, Ala.) Multiple locations in downtown Tuscaloosa are the sites of Monster Takeover, an extension of the Monster Makeover program established by the Tuscaloosa News in 2010. Combining the creative talents of local elementary school children and UA students, the Takeover features bronze sculptures placed at various locations in the downtown area. These unique and humorous characters are now featured on their own star-studded website: https://www.monstertakeover.com/.

The website features a map with each monster’s location indicated. By clicking on the location, the viewer is referred to a page featuring the elementary student’s original work on paper and their description about the drawing. A photo of the bronze sculpture is included with the name of the UA student who designed the piece.

Considered a part of the Tuscaloosa Public Art Initiative, Monster Takeover is an outgrowth of Monster Makeover, utilizing the same process as the original program, but the sculpture artists were all students in the Department of Art and Art History at The University of Alabama. The UA students’ works, based on past Monster Makeover participants, are all sculpted then cast in bronze.

Monster Makeover is an annual program that features the monster drawings of local elementary school students with a different school chosen annually. Their works are imitated and embellished by local artists in the artists’ choices of media and style. The project culminates with an October exhibit featuring the student work displayed alongside the artist’s interpretation.
