DINAH WASHINGTON CULTURAL ART CENTER WILL FEATURE WORK BY JAMIE ADAMS IN JUNE
(TUSCALOOSA, Ala.) The Arts Council of Tuscaloosa will present an exhibit by Jamie Adams titled “A Stuttering Warren” June 7-28, 2019 in The Arts Council Gallery at the Dinah Washington Cultural Arts Center. An artist reception open to the public will take place on June 7 from 5-8 p.m. during First Friday.
In this collection of new ceramic work by Jamie Adams, Assistant Professor of 3D Art at West Texas A & M University, the artist said his inspiration derives from a childhood spent in a profoundly religious family in rural North Alabama. “Spirituality and communal responsibility continue to be prominent themes in my artwork,” Adams said. “I often hide those themes behind diverse imagery from rabbits and dinosaurs to piles of skull. But in the end, all the work is about similar experiences I had with other young men growing up in the rural South.”
Each of the pieces in the exhibit was created from terracotta and fritware, a type of ceramic that dates back to the ninth century A.D. “I make my own fritware bodies, based on historic recipes and modern research and my own trial and error,” Adams said. “Fritware is made mostly of silica, something that makes this work different from clay-based ceramics.”
Adams earned his B.F.A. degree in painting from Montevallo University and an M.F.A in ceramics from Edinboro University of Pennsylvania.
Adams’ work has been in over 70 local, regional, national, and international exhibitions, including “NOT Approved by the Comics Code Authority, TOO!” at the Zuckerman Museum of Art at Kennesaw State University, Ga.; “Cup: The Intimate Object IV” at Charlie Cummings Gallery in Fort Wayne, Ind.; “Craft Forms” at the Wayne Art Center in Wayne, Pa.; “8 Fluid Ounces” at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, La.; “Cooper” at Cloud Gallery in Seattle, Wash.; “Paper in Particular” at Columbia College in Columbia, Mo.; “The Game Show” at the Contemporary Craft Museum in Portland, Ore.; “Gulf States Rising” at the Ohr-O’Keefe Museum of Art in Biloxi, Miss. and many others. His artwork has received many awards including The Karen Burgess-Smith Award at the Ceramics Biennial in Manchester, N.H. and Best in Show at the Gulf States Rising Exhibition at the George Ohr Museum. Adams’ artwork is also in many private residences throughout the U.S. and is in several public collections including The University of Alabama, Erie Art Museum, Francis Marion University and The Amity Art Foundation.
