ARTIST LINDA BELL FEATURED AT THE BAMA THEATRE
(Tuscaloosa) The Arts Council of Tuscaloosa will present an exhibit of work by artist Linda Bell August 27 – September 20, 2012 at the Bama Theatre’s Greensboro Room Gallery. Titled “Cinderella,” the display will feature textile works based on the Charles Perrault version of the fairytale.
The exhibit opening will take place on Thursday, September 6 from 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. during Art Night. Gallery hours are Monday – Friday from 9 a.m. – 12 noon and 1 p.m. – 4 p.m. and also during Bama Theatre events. During daytime hours, enter the gallery through the PARA entrance, located adjacent to the theatre.
Originally from Birmingham, Linda Bell now resides in Tuscaloosa. She graduated from The University of Alabama with an emphasis on art history. Bell began exhibiting her work in 2008 and has consistently shown both textiles and digital imagery since then. Today she works under the name of Elles Beles where you may find her art on Facebook.
Artist’s Statement
My textile pieces are storytelling displays of fabric based upon fairytales. I began with the Brothers Grimm story of The Twelve Dancing Princesses that has always been a personal favorite, and a strong source of creativity. I have expanded my narratives to include stories such as the Real Princess, Rapunzel, The Wild Swans and Cinderella. I use fabric to express the stories as 21st century illuminated manuscripts. Using Cinderella as the focus for a show, I have created a series of fabric panels illuminating different vignettes of the story. These narratives will be hung sequentially retelling the French version of Cinderella by Charles Perrault. In my version, Cinderella is a brunette whose hair envelopes metallic birds in flight while she lives in an 18th-century French chateau, and the two balls are held in the Hall of Mirrors much like the masquerade ball held there at Versailles for the marriage of Marie Antoinette and the Dauphin in May 1770.
