THE WORK OF ARTIST JANIS EDWARDS FEATURED AT THE CULTURAL ARTS CENTER

(Tuscaloosa) Works by Tuscaloosa artist Janis Edwards will be featured during the month of October at The Arts Council Gallery, located in the new Dinah Washington Cultural Arts Center. Presented by The Arts Council of Tuscaloosa, “Ephemeral and Enduring” will be on display October 4 – 25, 2013.

Janis Edwards is from Northern California, and has resided in Tuscaloosa for the past eleven years. Trained in papermaking and textile arts, she works in a variety of mediums, predominantly collage and assemblage using found materials – work that is exemplified in this exhibit, “Ephemeral and Enduring.” She has exhibited extensively in California, and in other venues including the DeYoung Museum of Art School in San Francisco, the Davenport (Iowa) Museum of Art, the Clock Tower in New York City and the Mobile Museum of Art. Her work was included in the two most recent Red Clay Surveys of Southeastern Art at the Huntsville Museum of Art. Dr. Edwards is Associate Professor of Communication Studies at UA, where she teaches and writes about visual rhetoric and political symbolism. She is at work on a book about the role of visuals in American politics.

“Ephemeral and Enduring” will open with a reception on October 4 at 5 p.m. during Downtown Tuscaloosa’s First Friday event. The Arts Council Gallery hours are 9 a.m. – noon and 1 p.m. - 4 p.m. on weekdays and noon – 8 p.m. on First Fridays.

The Dinah Washington Cultural Arts Center is located at 620 Greensboro Avenue in Downtown Tuscaloosa.
