Double Exposure Photography Exhibition

Artwork from the Double Exposure Photography Exhibition, 2010In its 12th year, the Double Exposure juried photography competition is open to photographers in the state of Alabama with divisions for both Juniors and Adults. Images to appear in the exhibit are chosen from digital images on disks mailed to The Arts Council then the purchase award, cash prizes and honorable mentions are selected after the exhibit is hung in the gallery prior to the opening reception.

 

2015 Competition

DATES

  • November 3 - 21, 2014:  Accept entry CDs in person and by mail - DEADLINE NOVEMBER 21 AT 4 PM
  • December 12, 2014:  Accepted works posted on Arts Council website
  • January 5 - 9, 2015:  Accepted works received in person and by mail at the Arts Council office; 9 am - 12 pm and 1 pm - 4pm
  • January 16, 2015:  Winners posted on website
  • January 19, 2015:  Exhibit begins; Gallery Hours Mon-Fri 9 am - 12 pm & 1 pm - 4 pm and during Bama Theatre events
  • February 15, 2015 from 1 pm - 2 pm:  Exhibit closing reception and awards presentation / pick-up work
  • Week of February 16, 2015:  Works picked up by artists not present at closing and those to be returned by pre-arranged shipping mailed back to artist

AWARDS

ELIGIBILITY

  • This is a juried competition open to Alabama residents only. Two rounds of judging will take place, the first (by CD) to select pieces that will appear in the exhibit, and the second (after accepted works are hung) to choose the winners. All photographic media are eligible. 
  • Adult Division is 18 years or older. Junior Division is ages 12-17. 
  • All entries must be recent, original work, executed within the last two years and not previously shown in a Tuscaloosa Arts Council solo or group gallery exhibit. 
  • Works chosen for the exhibit must be framed using professional standards under Plexiglas or glass and be ready for hanging. NO WRAPPED CANVASES.  Frames must be equipped with wire securely attached for hanging. Loose wires, metal brackets or other hangers are not acceptable, and the work will be rejected prior to final judging. 
  • Framed work should be no larger than 32” x 32”. All works accepted for the exhibit must have the provided identification tag attached to the back upper right corner of the piece including name, title of piece and price.  
  • There will be no substitutions for accepted works. 
  • All works will be accepted at the discretion of the Arts Council. 
  • Any works not meeting the aforementioned standards will be subject to elimination.

ENTRY APPLICATION & CD FORMAT

  • Adult Division: A fee of $35 will be charged to enter three images. Two additional images may be submitted (for a maximum of five) for $5 per piece.
  • Junior Division: A fee of $25 will be charged to enter three images.  Two additional images may be submitted (for a maximum of five) for $5 per piece.
  • No entry fees will be refunded.
  • Entrants must submit images on a CD. The CD must be labeled with the artist’s name, address and phone number, and should be labeled with a permanent marker on the top side and protected with a case or sleeve. 
  • The provided entry form must be completed in full, including phone number and email address. File names MUST BE NAMED with the TITLE of the corresponding photograph.  If title is “untitled,” provide a description for clarification on entry form. 
  • Format must be compatible to a PC with Windows, JPG file, 72 dpi, 800 x 600 pixels maximum.
  • The following must be submitted together:  (1) Entry fee (checks payable to Arts Council of Tuscaloosa County), (2) CD and (3) entry form. CDs will not be returned. Send to: The Arts Council, P.O. Box 1117, Tuscaloosa, AL  35403.
  • Accepted entries will be posted on the Arts Council website at tuscarts.org/competition-doubleexposure.php  However, entrant’s email address must still be provided on entry form.

SHIPPING AND DELIVERY

Works may be delivered to The Arts Council office in person or shipped. Works to be shipped must be mailed prepaid in sturdy reusable crates or cartons via UPS, FedEx or USPS.  Ship cartons to: Arts Council of Tuscaloosa, 600 Greensboro Avenue, Tuscaloosa, AL, 35401. Return shipment will be made according to prepaid method specified by the artist. A money order or pre-paid return postage must be included with those works that are to be shipped back.

SALES

Works will be for sale if so designated by the artist. The Arts Council charges no commission. The Arts Council will not act as a sales agent, but will provide the collector the necessary contact with the requested artist.  
Be sure to list price of work on the entry application. If the work is not for sale, indicate with NFS, but still include insurance value. Entries not for sale are not eligible for the Purchase Award.

INSURANCE AND PUBLICITY

All works will be insured while in the custody of the Arts Council, however, works will not be insured or considered to be in our custody prior to or after the designated dates, including during shipping prior to and after the show.  
The Arts Council reserves the right to utilize images of accepted and/or winning entries for publicity or educational purposes and display those images at our discretion.

 1.Open link to show guidelines/application form PDF, located above this text.  Select File-Save As and save the PDF to your computer.  In order to view and complete the form properly, you must have the latest version of Adobe Reader on your computer. 

2.Read all guidelines before completing the form and submitting work to The Arts Council.

3.The application form (page 3 of the PDF) is designed to complete using your computer.  After opening the PDF in Adobe Reader, click the selection in the square on the upper right side of your screen that says “Highlight Existing Fields.”

4.Fill out the form by clicking in the first highlighted field after “Name.”  After you complete each field, push Tab on your keyboard to move to the next, or use your mouse to click in each field.  When selecting “Yes” or “No,” use your mouse to click in the appropriate square.

5.Be sure to select File - Save periodically to save your work for future editing.  If you wish to edit your form, be sure to select the version saved to your hard drive, not the original form on The Arts Council site.

6.Upon final editing and completion, print out page 3 of the form. Either mail or bring your CD to The Arts Council office accompanied by your entry fee, completed application and list of included works and prices (bottom left of form). The completed labels (bottom right of form) are only necessary if your work is chosen to appear in the exhibit, in which case the labels must be taped to the back of the framed work.
